GILGIT: A 12-member committee has been set up by Prime Minister Imran Khan to make recommendations to give Gilgit-Baltistan provisional status as a province of Pakistan.
The body, which also includes GB Chief Minister Mohammad Khalid Khurshid, the Attorney General of Pakistan, the Federal Secretaries for Economy, Defense, Foreign Relations, Parliamentary Affairs, the GB Chief Secretary, the Joint Secretary of the GB Council and members of the security services, is chaired by Baltistan’s Ali Amin Gandapur.
The duty of the committee is to make suggestions that take into account the resolutions of the United Nations on the contested territory of Kashmir and the decision of the Supreme Court of Pakistan on the determination of GB status. Within two months, the committee will complete the job.
According to official sources, in order to declare GB as a constitutional part of Pakistan, the Pakistani Tehreek-i-Insaf government would table a bill in the National Assembly to change the constitution.
