HYDERABAD: A young Covid-19 infected mother gave birth on Saturday morning to a stable baby girl at the city branch of Liaquat University Hospital, the first such procedure since the February outbreak of the pandemic last year.
The mother was moved to the isolation unit of Covid-19 and the baby was shifted for treatment to a private hospital.

“After learning that she had tested positive for Covid-19, the mother was quite scared,” said Prof. Sajida Yousufani, the gynaecologist in whose ward the infant was born after the caesarean section.
“As we were hoping for a normal delivery, we did not want to operate on the mother, but her family was extremely tense and so was the expectant mother,” Dr. Yousufani said.
Since the mother had been moved to the Covid-19 intensive care unit, the hospital administration began disinfecting the operation theatre in gynaecology unit-I.
The woman was first treated in the town’s private hospital, but in spite of her positive PCR test, the hospital management did not admit her. So, under the care of Dr Samina, the woman had to be transferred to LUH, where gynaecology consultants Dr Tooba and Dr Sobh performed surgery on her.
