ISLAMABAD: The (ECP) election for the seat of Mayor of Islamabad will be held on 28 December.
The seat fell vacant when Sheikh Anser Aziz of PML-N resigned in a shocking act on Oct 4, days after submitting a summary to the Interior Ministry proposing to hand over to the federal government the functions of four (ECP) directorates under the Municipal Corporation Islamabad (MCI).
Under the by-poll schedule declared by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), a public notice inviting nominations will be released by the returning officer on December 9 and nomination papers will be obtained and scrutinised on December 11 and December 16, respectively.
Dec 17 was set as the last date for the submission of appeals against the approval or dismissal by Dec 18 of the appointment documents to be determined by the appeal authority.
The last date for the removal of applications will be Dec 21, and the official list of candidates with election symbols will be released the next day.
Polling will be completed on 28 December and the findings will be announced on 29 December.

In order to ensure that the polls are performed in a fair and law-abiding manner, the ECP has advised the executive authority not to use state machinery to manipulate elections for the benefit of a single individual or political party.
“If any person in government service misuses his official position in any way to influence election results, a brief code of conduct issued with the poll schedule reads pursuant to Section 58 of the Islamabad Capital Territory Local Government Act, 2015.”
It also makes it clear that any public office holder who is found to have infringed any clause of election laws or of orders given by the commission is to be punished as required by statute.
The ECP has also issued a notification appointing as District Returning Officer (DRO) Regional Election Commissioner Rawalpindi Nazar Abbas and District Election Commissioner Islamabad Naeem Ahmad as the Returning Officer (RO) for the polls.
Former Mayor Sheikh Anser Aziz, known to be a loyal assistant to former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, unexpectedly resigned, accusing the government of interference in some of the MCI’s main directorates.

The former mayor was suspended by the Local Government Commission (LGC) established by the PTI government from his post twice. He was reinstated, however by the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
