BAJAUR: Here on Friday, the elders of the Warah district of Mamond tehsil barred women from directly receiving monthly grants from centres set up under a cash grant scheme by the World Bank.
At a jirga in the Sawi district, the resolution was taken, with the members making it clear that women visiting the centres individually each month for the collection of stipends under the Child Wellness Grant were against local customs and practises.
The elders said they had repeatedly asked the management of the programme either to send the sum to the men or to arrange for female workers at the centres run under the bank’s Sada-i-Amn programme, but to no avail.
The Jirga agreed that from today no woman would be permitted to attend the centres (Saturday). It was also determined that he would be fined Rs10,000 if any tribesman permitted his female family member to visit the said centres.
The elders have declared that they would receive Rs10,000 from the family of every woman calling the nearby FM radio stations by telephone.
