According to a statement from the meteorological department, the minimum temperature reported in Karachi on Sunday was 10.5 degrees Celsius, the lowest during the month of November in the last 10 years.
Previously, when it plummeted to 11 ° C, the lowest temperature was recorded in Nov 2017. In Nov 2010, a temperature of 12 ° C was reported.
In 1986, 7.4 °C was the lowest temperature ever recorded in the region.
Karachi witnessed its first rain spell earlier this week, heralding the beginning of the year’s winter season. The Met department had said that the spell quickly brought the mercury down to as low as 16 ° C and further deteriorated to 14 ° C by the next morning.
A department official cautioned that in December, when two or three “good spells of rain” could reach the area, the city could see more rain and have a much colder winter than usual.
He expected that the last month of the year will be even cooler than in previous years, where the temperature will drop more in relation to recent patterns.
“This year temperatures will be lower than usual in December,” he said. “It would be a little early to predict January, but the current model and trend suggests that temperatures in January may remain as they have been in previous years,” he said.
They added that late on Tuesday night, the city experienced its first winter showers that immediately brought the mercury down to as low as 16 degrees Celsius and further decreased to 14 degrees Celsius by the morning.
“From all over the city, including Gulzar-i-Hijri, Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Rashid Minhas Road, Gulshan-i-Jamal, Sharea Faisal, Shah Faisal Colony, Malir and Quaidabad, light to moderate showers have been reported,” said an official.
