KARACHI: On Friday, as the temperature fell to 5.6 degrees Celsius, the city experienced its coldest day in January in 12 years.
Earlier, in 2008, the city’s temperature fell in January to 5.5 degrees Celsius.
On Friday, the maximum temperature recorded was 24.5 degrees Celsius.
The cold wave has spread due to a powerful westerly wave approaching the upper and central parts of the region, according to a Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) official.
The coldest winter month in Pakistan, including Karachi, is January. In 1934, when the [mercury] fell to zero degrees Celsius, the lowest ever [temperature] of Karachi was also recorded in this month, he said, adding that the cold wave would likely remain in the city until January 10.
