Ace Bollywood director Karan Johar wanted to do something new with his hand in 2018: a period drama named Takht. He then revealed that a star-studded ensemble cast of Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, Janhvi Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Bhumi Pednekar and Vicky Kaushal would feature in the film.
Two years on, though, it is confirmed that Takht has now been permanently shelved. A source close to the production told Bollywood Hungama, “The ambitious project Takht by Karan Johar has been permanently shelved.” Owing to Covid-19 earlier, it was put on hold. The team making it, however, had a tough time figuring out their artistic differences and getting on the same page.” The source added, “Although Takht might not happen, Karan Johar has been working on a love storey for which he considers Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt as the leaders.

Talking about Takht, when asked how he’s going to strike a balance in Takht as Bollywood period movies have also been criticised for promoting Islamophobia, Johar answered in a previous press conference, “My dear, you are talking to a film-maker who’s directed a film called My Name is Khan. My sensitivities to religions across the world will always be on point. Also, with Takht, this isn’t a storey that I wrote. History wrote this storey, I’m only telling it.”
