ISLAMABAD: On Friday, China praised Pakistan’s “positive contribution” to foreign counterterrorism efforts and backed the crackdown by Islamabad on terrorists.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lijian Zhao also told the microblogging website, Twitter, that any effort to disrupt the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project would not succeed.
China appreciates Pakistan’s constructive contribution to the international cause of counter-terrorism, and actively supports Pakistan in its crackdown on terrorist forces. Attempts aimed at sabotaging CPEC are doomed to fail, said Lijian in his tweet.
Lijian voiced similar views earlier in Beijing during his daily press briefing, when reacting to a question from Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Maj Gen Babar Iftikhar last week about the joint news conference.
Qureshi and Maj Gen Iftikhar released a dossier containing “irrefutable evidence” of India’s funding of terrorism in Pakistan at a news conference in Islamabad. Qureshi and Iftikhar claimed that CPEC was being sabotaged by India.
The spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry said that any effort to disrupt the flagship CPEC project would not succeed. “I have already given my response on this issue. No attempt to sabotage the CPEC will succeed,” he said.
He reiterated that the CPEC was a significant and groundbreaking Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) project and was important not only for the two countries’ mutual growth, but also for regional connectivity and prosperity. “We are confident that with support of the international community, China and Pakistan can work together to ensure CPEC’s success,” he said.
Qureshi and the ISPR leader exchanged video and audio recordings, along with records, of Indian handlers and terrorists engaging with each other and Indian intelligence handlers sending orders to terrorists in Pakistan, with media people at the news conference in Islamabad.
Islamabad gave a briefing this week to the envoys of the permanent members of the Security Council of the United Nations (UNSC), including China, on clear facts of Indian participation in terrorism in the region.
“The envoys were informed of the involvement of India in the planning, promotion, support, encouragement, financing and execution of terrorist activities in Pakistan,” said the Foreign Office. It said The files containing irrefutable evidence… were handed over to the envoys].”
In Beijing, Lijian told the briefing that China rejected all kinds of terrorism and even opposed double counter-terrorism norms. “China calls on the international community, the regional countries in particular, to carry out counterterrorism cooperation and safeguard collective security,” he said.
