The joint exercises are seen as another step in increasing military-to-military collaboration, suggesting that the relationship between the two countries, whose links have been marred by decades of Cold War rivalry, has been slowly improving.
Every year, Pak-Russia joint Druzhba (friendship) military drills are held. In 2016, the exercises began. These drills include counter-terrorism and special forces elements.
In September of this year, the Pakistan Armed Forces contingent engaged in the opening ceremonies of the ‘Kavkaz 2020’ international military exercise in the Russian city of Astrakhan.
In Russia last year, Pakistan also engaged in a related series of exercises called ‘Tsentr 2019’. Troops from Kazakhstan , Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan and other countries participated in the war games.
