Pakistan Army was not in politics, is not and will not be: Sheikh Rashid

Minister for Interior Sheikh Rashid Ahmed addresses the media in Islamabad on Monday. — Dharti News/Files

Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed stressed on Monday that in the past, the Pakistan Army was “not involved” in the politics of the region, nor would it be in the future.

Speaking to the Islamabad media, he asked why the leaders of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) of the opposition did not take the name of Gen Ziaul Haq when they spoke of the alleged role of the military in politics.

They had Ziaul Haq’s boots polished. They are a result of gate number four of General Headquarters. Pakistan’s Army is a large army. It was not in politics, in politics it is not and will not be. It was with democracy, it is with democracy and it will be with it.

“He referred to the power show of the PDM in Larkana a day earlier in which PPP President Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said that the opposition had united on the platform of the PDM to rescue the nation from the alleged inefficiencies of the government and will jointly make efforts to end “the selected and selected sector.

PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz also lambasted Prime Minister Imran Khan’s selected government, saying: When political parties began to finish their terms, some powers suited to “divide and rule” began to become restless. Then we saw [former ISI leader Lt Gen Ahmed Shuja] Pasha set up a party by gathering political trash called the Tehreek-i-Insaf Pakistan, and that party was then u.

Those who committed even more serious offences such as breaching the country and the Constitution, losing Siachen and the cause of Kashmir, violating one’s oath to intervene in politics, murdering political rivals, and committing corruption worth billions were not held responsible while politicians were given death sentences and faced character assassinations.

He claimed that when the PDM announced the date for its long march, the government would decide on its response. “Imran Khan can take any decision. We have not held a meeting on how we will set up welcome camps for them.”

“There is a difference between long march and lone march.”There is a difference between a long march and a lone march.

He argued that the struggle of the opposition was “more against the NAB (National Accountability Bureau) instead of Imran Khan” adding that what the opposition wanted was an end to the corruption cases against them.

He expected that the opposition would finally “reconsider” them on the issue of resignations by opposition lawmakers in the national and provincial assemblies.

They said yesterday that Murtaza Javed Abbasi would give his resignation to [National Assembly Member]. You’ll see [he says] ‘I didn’t send this.'”Yesterday they said [Member of the National Assembly] Murtaza Javed Abbasi will give his resignation. You will see [him say] ‘I did not send this.'”illegal,”illegal”

The minister said it was up to Abbasi to determine “whether he wants to listen to Maryam” or to ask the National Assembly Secretariat about who sent a resignation on his behalf.

“You will see there will be no resignations,” he emphasised.

PDM’s only purpose is spreading confusion: minister

Speaking at a separate press conference, Minister of Information Shibli Faraz said the only aim of the PDM was to spread “confusion” in the country and to follow the formula of: “Me, my family and my wealth”

“in which sometimes elections are talked about with no proof”in which elections are sometimes talked about without facts.

The minister said that seven soldiers were martyred yesterday in an attack in Balochistan. In the jalsa, there was no mention of it, but the criticisms rained on the institution,”There was no mention of that in the jalsa but the criticisms rained on that institution,”

Benazir Bhutto died yesterday, according to us, because of the way her enemies were taken and seated at the mausoleum of her and her father. Those who pained her all her life [and] supported taking Zulfikar Ali Bhutto to the gallows today were sitting arms in arms, he said.

Sunday’s rally was called “moment of shame for the PPP and a warning for the PML-N” by Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry.

He alleged that when Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was hanged, the family of PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif was among those that “distributed sweets”

He said the “so-called nationalists” in the PDM were making speeches against Punjab, the military and the judiciary, but “they have no shame that when they were in power, how much money went to Balochistan and other provinces.”

The minister said that inside the PDM, only three people believed in the idea of resigning to bring pressure on the government: Nawaz, Maryam and Fazlur Rehman, leader of JUI-F.

“No fourth person in the system is ready to hand in their resignation whether it’s [PML-N president] Shehbaz Sharif or [PPP co-chairperson] Asif Ali Zardari because they know you have to work within the system,” he added.

Apparently referring to Maryam and PPP president Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, Chaudhry said that negotiations with “children” who he said “have never read a book in their lives” could not be conducted.

We invite serious people to come and talk at the parties. The platform has been set up, which is the parliament, the agenda has been set, come and speak about electoral reforms; we have provided the negotiation format, if you want to change aspects, you are more than welcome, but for this, he stressed, the serious leadership will have to come forward.
