MOUNT MAUNGANUI: Glenn Phillips shattered New Zealand’s fastest Twenty20 International hundred to support the hosts with a 72-run Sunday victory over West Indies and an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
In his 108 out of 51 deliveries, the middle-order batsman struck eight sixes and 10 fours as the hosts, who claimed the opening T20 by five wickets, posted a huge 238 for three in their 20 overs after being put in to bat first at Mount Maunganui’s Bay Oval.
At frequent intervals in their chase, West Indies kept losing wickets and could only hit 166 for nine.
For New Zealand’s fastest hundred in the shortest version of the game, Colin Munro had taken 47 balls to hit his century against West Indies on the same ground in 2018, but Phillips strengthened the mark by taking a lower delivery for his tonne.
With fast bowler Keemo Paul returning the worst figures among them, conceding 64 off his four overs, none of the West Indies bowlers could make an impact.
For the third wicket, the 23-year-old Phillips added 184 with Devon Conway, who made an unbeaten 65 out of 37 deliveries.
“That was absolutely brilliant,” said Phillips. Dev is an extremely great player to play with and keeps you cool under pressure. It’s just unbelievable to be part of a relationship so large. It has been a lot of fun.
