The specifics of the ‘Shining Saddar’ project were discussed by officials of the RCB at a briefing at the RCCI offices with representatives of the Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI).

The meeting was attended by Brigadier Ijaz Qamar Kayani, President of the Station Commander and Cantonment Board, Rawalpindi Cantonment Board Cantonment Executive Officer (CEO) Umar Farooq, and Chaklala Cantonment Board CEO Wasim Shahid.

Also present were community chief Sohail Altaf, RCCI senior vice president Usman Ashraf, vice president Shahraiz A. Malik, former president Shamail Dawood, Asad Mashhadi, executive committee members, Anjuman-i-Tajiran delegates, and members of the chamber.

The project allocated Rs150 million to rebuild roads and sidewalks, Rs30 million to beautify the markets, Rs120 million to lay underground cables and Rs25 million to construct parking areas. Work on Adamjee Road has begun, where a sewage pipe is being laid.

A presentation on the construction projects carried out in 2020 was given by the RCB and CCB officials. They told the respondents that the Harley Street reconstruction and widening work had been completed at a cost of Rs105 million.

At a cost of Rs57 million, the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Caltex Road was completed and Rs35 million was spent on the construction of Lal Kurti Bazaar, where drainage lines were laid. In addition, the invasion of nullahs was eliminated and tuff tiles were installed to allow the food street available.

For Jhanda Chichi, a project worth Rs45 million has been initiated, which involves drain cleaning, road maintenance, greenbelt development and sidewalks.

In Katcheri Chowk, Sarwar Chowk, Sarwar Park and Defence Chowk, construction work is also being carried out.

RCCI President Mohammad Nasir Mirza welcomed the construction project of Rs325 million, saying it would boost the situation of the cantonment area’s largest commercial centre.

He said that full cooperation and assistance for the Shining Saddar project will be extended by the RCCI.

“The efforts of the Station Commander and CEO of the Cantonment Board to energise the business community’s environment are highly laudable,” he added.

Group leader Sohail Altaf said the authorities in the cantonment have taken a range of measures to improve and beautify the city.
