BAGHDAD: Two Iraqi intelligence sources said three Katyusha rockets landed in Baghdad’s highly secured “green zone” on Sunday in an attempt targeting the US Embassy.
An outlaw party had fired rockets that hit a residential complex within the zone, destroying buildings and vehicles, but causing no casualties, according to the Iraqi military.

Sirens blared within the zone, which houses government buildings and foreign missions, from the embassy complex.
One of the rockets was diverted by an anti-rocket system, said one security official whose office is situated within the Green Zone. No injuries happened.
US officials blame Iran-backed militias for periodic rocket attacks on Iraqi installations, including at the Baghdad embassy. No known groups backed by Iran have asserted transparency.

In October, a number of militia groups declared that they had halted rocket attacks on US forces on condition that the timeline for the removal of American troops was provided by Iraq’s government.
