Islam is the leading faith in Uzbekistan, but the authoritarian government is staunchly nonreligious and has actually kept tight control over the faith in the three years of freedom from the Soviet Union.

Education preacher Sherzod Shermatov stated the authorities “plan to allow national headscarves and also skullcaps in white or light colours” in institutions after “the allures of many parents”.

He said the relocation was needed to make sure every kid got a secular education and learning.

Models of the allowed headscarves presented by Shermatov suggested ladies of school age would not be able to cover their chin as is the case with the hijab– a head covering prominent throughout the Muslim globe. Shermatov did not define what age category the measures would influence. Head Of State Shavkat Mirziyoyev has actually kicked back some controls on state-sanctioned Islam because involving power in the nation in 2016 after the death of long-ruling caesar Islam Karimov.

Earlier this year, Uzbekistan amended its law on freedom of principles to allow women to put on the hijab in public locations– though not in structures real estate state institutions such as schools.
